WATCH: A PCG Cessna Caravan aircraft issued radio challenges to Chinese maritime militia vessels that have been swarming Rozul Reef in the West Philippine Sea since Tuesday, June 17.

On Friday, two China Coast Guard ships were also monitored near the reef.

Rozul Reef lies 128 nautical miles from Palawan, well within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

In addition to aircraft, two 44-meter vessels of the PCG continue to monitor the activities of Chinese ships at Rozul Reef.

Tarriela: “Since we have our CG station here in Pag-asa, we are religiously challenging them [Chinese vessels] that what they are doing is a violation of our sovereignty. Alam naman natin na ang Pag-asa Cays 1, 2, 3 and 4 fall within our own territorial sea dito sa Pag-asa.”

PCG spokesperson for the WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela said the Chinese research vessels launched their rubber boats and conducted maritime marine scientific research in the Pag-asa Cays, which are within Pag-asa Island’s 12-nautical mile territorial sea.

Alcos added, the vessel carrying the suspected shabu is a Philippine-registered fishing boat with foreign nationals on board.

According to Alcos, this is one of the largest illegal drug apprehensions in the history of the Philippine Navy.

PH Navy spokesman Capt. John Percie Alcos said the apprehended illegal substance will be transported to the Naval Operating Base in Subic, Zambales for documentation and turnover to proper authorities.

The apprehension was a joint operation of the NLNC and the PH Drug Enforcement Agency.

Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo said the proposal to acquire multi-role jet fighters is still part of the PAF’s plans.

“In spite of the 12 additional FA-50s, we would still be needing more fighter aircraft because we have a very wide archipelagic area to protect and monitor.”

AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla said the PAF official is still under military custody.
