I never answered the question "Was it in the game data already but just disabled because it was unfinished?" I believe the original routine that made this code work was overwritten. The attract mode with the flying RoboEggs made the final cut and used different code.

On a crazy desperate whim I decided to just port the code from Fighting Vipers directly into Sonic the Fighters and replace the call to it's attract movie to my newly written code. Obviously there's some flags set incorrectly, but at least it works and we can get an idea of what it looked like!

I knew that the data looked very similar to the data in my disassembly analysis of the previous fighting game by AM2 "Fighting Vipers". The data looked very similar to how the code works for it's attract intro movie www.youtube.com/watch?v=hne1...

There does indeed appear to be initialization for the names, I just haven't gotten them to work yet. I will post a full working attract mode if I ever get that far, but I got REALLY excited and had to post this!
