cons: you could definitely tell it was mark's first big boy project, it had a decent case of first movie syndrome. it needed the fat trimmed off, could've lost 20-30 minutes and been better for it. you could also feel the low budget at points, though it was handled well.

the ending, however, fucks. very surreal and weird and atmospheric. cool to see all that practical blood at the end, too: very "evil dead in space." i think in general it shows that mark has a really good cinematic sense and has the chops to be a really solid film director if he wants it.

i can see why people are saying the front half is slow. it's got that lovecraftian slow-building dread thing going on, but the fact that we're just locked in a very small box with one dude makes it feel slower than it actually is.

equally sending me is the fact that several people have told me it was quite good

everything anymore is so tightly controlled and market-tested and enshittified and seen as launching points for your influencer career or whatever. where can a teenager go to sell human bones on etsy or threaten to carpet bomb northern ohio over a superwholock ship war these days? nowhere.

out of all the things in god's kingdom we could ban on our stupid little app we choose... furries? what the fuck did the furries do. they usually just kind of chill out and... do whatever furries do. politely and with an excess of spending money for art commissions

And fwiw, they did talk all the way back then about how in order to meet the studio deadlines, they'd have to fast-track into production, so they likely had to blast through the writing and didn't get a ton of time with it. Whether it would've been better with time and more tweaking, though? Ehhhhh

They did, actually! I double checked into it, there's news stories and statements from the studio / crew from 2023 talking about the strike. It definitely affected the season, too, there's interviews of Myers and Goldsman both talking about potential strike effects back in '23.

wait, are their writers not union? because WGA was on strike too in 2023, i assumed that was what they were referencing

yeah, i watched lost on streaming after having watched it as a teenager live and it REALLY benefits from the streaming format where you can just watch it straight through instead of having to remember the details for a week

every time they ask i have to be like before you give me the look, it's the capitol of sichuan province, it's real, i swear 😭

i think The Youths think lost was like. ncis or something. like it was a schlock network tv drama. never realizing that like a good majority of the prestige tv of today owes a massive debt to lost

it's like. it's very pretty, sometimes. and in the grand scheme of things it's FINE. but it's not nearly as good as everyone says, and it's really not doing anything half as ~revolutionary as people say considering it's built heavily on the backs of (imo better) programs like westworld or legion
