I relate to this. I spent most of my life masking; not well enough for my parents tho & ended up homeless & a junkie.

I got clean & back on my feet but my real recovery didn’t start till I met my partner. They allowed me to unmask and start unpacking all the trauma.

After lockdowns ended, we didn’t send them back and have been taking them to see an OT and speech pathologist since. No more hysteria, no more meltdowns. No more withholding highly preferreds.

The turn around in their life has been incredible and we’ve been fighting back against ABA ever since.

Yeah my middle child did 20h per week when they were first diagnosed. I wanted to learn as much as possible so I read 7-8 books on ASD and therapies used to “treat” it. I realized quickly that ABA was harmful but it was really my partner who drove it home in no uncertain terms.
