Sometime in 2012 I started this account on twitter in order to record ~daily updates during bike touring across the US west. I've since used it exclusively for bike tours. In 2024 I deleted the twitter account and in 2025, imported to bluesky. 🚵‍♀️💖
We're back in Berlin, having taken the least efficient path possible from Dresden, following the length of the Spree over 365 miles (590km). It was a great ride with natural beauty, culture and history. I've now biked three of Germany's rivers (Spree, Rhine, Donau) 🏞️♥️🇩🇪. I expect I'll be back.

Today we finished the Schlossradweg, a tour of castles in the Brandenburg area and an addition to our original route. Here we are enjoying a lunch spread on the castle grounds in Steinhöfl. This was our longest day riding, a bit shy of 70 miles and we re-entered Berlin's district just before camp.

We decided to add some miles and biked a bit north into Brandenburg to check out old castles on a spur route. A little squall was enough to get rain jackets out but otherwise it was mellow riding with poppies blooming in the rye. Hard to believe we will be back in Berlin in two days time.

We had a nice off day in Beeskow. The city wall is still mostly intact and its a lovely somewhat sleepy medieval city on the Spree. Becky took this awesome photo of an old elm with the city wall around it.

A mellow ride into Beeskow. We ran into a bakery truck from Prabatsch and took the hand pulled ferry across the Spree. Becky had a run-in with a European hornet at our picnic lunch but otherwise things were uneventful and we had another nice day riding amidst forests and grain fields into town.

We made it to the heart of pickle country and the center of the Ghukenradweg. Suitably, we powered up on pickles and Gherken radler as we pedaled. Nice warm day today. We had some flexibility in the schedule and took it slow today with some stops for coffee, kake, and a biergarten amidst the miles.

Today was a longer ride to join up with the Spree river and enter the Spreewald. Also it is a holiday and festivities abound - mostly many folks out on bikes, some committedly touring the bier stubbes. After yesterday's rain today has been a bit windy but fair and we have enjoyed the holiday energy.

A day off in Großaschen lined up well with a fair bit of rain. We enjoyed some downtime, read, dodged thunderstorms and learned about the remarkable lignite mining in the region.

A short day from Bergen to Großkoschen with a stop at a historic grain mill (Schwarzkolm) and the neighborhood Bäckerei in Laubusch.

An accidentally neat photo trying to focus my phone while riding 😂. We rode from Bautzen to Bergen today, just north of Hoyerswerda, traveling between and around many lakes on beautiful forested paths. The locust trees are in bloom everywhere and looking gorgeous. Also a stop for pickle ice cream 🥒!

Riding into the Altstadt in Bautzen, the view stopped us both in our tracks. Relatively short day riding in the country today just a short distance from the Czech border. Some rain tonight but we managed to not ride in it yet. We will enjoy the old city tonight and carry on tomorrow.

47 miles from the Bäckerei in Dresden to the Bier stubbe in Komenz. Lovely day, a bit windy at times but the views and wildflowers made up for it.

Off on another tour in Deutschland. At the Dresden Hopbahnhof, headed Nord 🍻🥨🌱☀️🚲

Feeling a bit under the weather and finding the route increasingly urban/industrial, we called it in Linz and hopped on a train back to Munchen for a bit of down time. 700km, across Germany and part of Austria, it's been a lovely tour on the Donau (Danube).

Hallo Österreich, hallo Sachertorte. We are headed to just before Linz today, powered by cake and coffee as usual.
February 11, 2025 at 2:28 PM
Arrived in Passau, just a few kilometers to the Austrian border! Thunderstorms last night. Coffee at the Donau/Inn confluence this AM.

Short day of biking today. Got as far as Regensburg and decided to stick around for an organ concert in this amazing gothic cathedral.

Neuburg to Herrnsaal today, lots of riding on peaceful gravel roads on levies. Also ferried through the Donau narrows near Kelheim.
February 11, 2025 at 2:28 PM
Took a day off the bikes in Neuburg to rest up a bit and enjoy the area.
February 11, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Long day biking through the lovely Bavarian countryside, ending in Neuburg. Enjoyed a couple radlers under the flowering buckeyes for a midafternoon powerup.

Quarkzopf, erdbeeren, und himbeerkonserven from the market in Erhingen. Nice sunny day today. Camped in Riedheim.

A rainy AM between Beuron and Sigmaringen. We dried out in the afternoon and camped in a secret garden, after finding the town campground closed.
February 11, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Wildflowers abound on the road between Donaueschingen and Tuttlingen.
February 11, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Off to Donaueschingen, happy to be back adventuring on two wheels.

Heading back to Seattle today thankful for twenty(!) lovely days of riding through beautiful country without injury.
