The 10-Year Health Plan bets heavily on technology and AI helping to tackle pressures and improve care.

Malte Gerhold argues that, while optimism about tech in health care is welcome, we need a clearer vision and a more detailed, credible plan for service change⬇️

'The Health Foundation has long argued that policymakers must focus not simply on tech ambitions and procurement, but on supporting the NHS to actually implement and use tech effectively.' Dr Malte Gerhold, Director of Innovation and Improvement at the Health Foundation

➡️ NHS funding - to meet the needs of a growing and ageing population and improve services, we estimate the NHS revenue budget would need to be at least £198bn by 2028/29. This is based on the NHS achieving productivity gains of 1% per year from 2023/24 onwards.

➡️ Adult social care - publicly funded adult social care is facing rising demand and increased costs, resulting in people going without the care they need. Just to meet demand and rising provider costs would need an extra £3.4bn by 2028/29; to improve access, this sum could be an additional £6.4bn.

➡️ Public health and prevention - the government should increase investment in the public health grant. Restoring the grant to real-terms equivalent of 2015/16 levels per person and allocating it on an equitable basis would require additional £3.6bn over Spending Review period (2025/26 to 2028/29).
