this population had already begun forming their second tubers while they were growing in ideal conditions at the Botanic Gardens nursery, so have been able to draw nutrients from these tubers for the last 2 years after planting. Next year the plants will need to rely on tubers formed in situ

Like many terrestrial orchids, D. fragrantissima has tubers under the ground that they rely on to store nutrients, during the driest parts of the year they lose all their foliage and go dormant, using energy stored in the tubers to start growing again at the end of summer
