I am a professional geologist who has specialized in economic geology with an empahsis on the epithermal - porphyry environment. Looking to exchange ideas, photos, knowledge.

Geochemical weathering of a diabase (dolerite for those Europeans) sill in Salt River Canyon, Arizona. This is not a conglomerate and those are not boulders. The “spheroids” are a result of the weathering. #geology #weathering
A weathered diabase. Outcrop is of typical diabase w plagioclase, pyroxenes, accessories and olivine which maybe partially serpentinized.

Artisanal mining in souther Peru, 1998. Ore is hauled in sacks from nearby gold veins, crushed in "quimbaletes", amalgamated with mercury which is then burnt off in a retort to recover the gold. #geology #geologist #mining
Sacks of ore are ready for crushing. The quimbaletes are in the background. These are large tubs with a large boulder used as a crusher. The rocker-arms attached to the top of the boulder are operated by man-power. Workers standing on the quimbalete rocker arm - basically a see-saw. Workers on the rocker-arms. Removing crushed ore from the quimbalete. The ore is than amalgameted with mercury to recover the gold.
