2) Another way to make a pad more secure is to put a via through it, since it will be held to the other side of the board

PCBLibraries also put out a small update to the IPC standard to eliminate cases where different footprints will have the same name.

If you have access to a laser cutter/milling machine/3D printer you could also make a disk with holes and solder the LEDs to wherever they need to go on the back with some jumpers?
