"If state lawmakers needed a sign that their bill boosting oil drilling to appease refineries was ill-advised, they got it last Thursday night in the form of towering flames."

CBD's Christina Scaringe wrote a letter to the editor following the recent #ElSegundo refinery incident ➡️ lat.ms/4qhpM3l
Flaming emissions coming from an oil refinery smokestack backed by a clear blue sky. There is white text in a black box covering the left side of the image. It reads: Every time our leaders cave to the volatile, hazardous fossil fuel industry, Californians suffer for it. It’s time to speed the transition to clean energy and get off oil and gas for good.

The county could switch off these lights and use the safer, wildlife-friendly streetlights already installed along the highway. But the county refuses to act — despite depending on sea turtles for tourism. It has also failed to implement beachfront lighting ordinances to protect sea turtles.
biologicaldiversity.org
Besides driving female sea turtles from their nests, the stadium-like lights divert hatchlings from the sea, drawing them inland to become exhausted and die.

Each summer in Glynn County, GA, thousands of imperiled loggerheads struggle across the sand to the ocean for their first swim, but the lights of a nearby highway exit have turned their journey from difficult to deadly.

“I’m relieved that the Forest Service terminated this permit for harmful activities in one of the candy darter’s best remaining strongholds,” said Meg Townsend, senior freshwater attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.

Every darter has its day 🎉

A legal challenge to a coal hauling permit came to a successful close today. The permit allowed for operations that threatened to endanger candy darters and their critical habitat in West Virginia’s Cherry River watershed.

Got guac on your #gameday table?

Every day more than 10 football fields' worth of Mexican forest — where millions of monarchs migrate to spend the winter — are cleared for avocado production.

“This seems to be the smoking gun proving that our lawsuit challenging Alligator Alcatraz is entirely correct,” said Elise Bennett, Florida and Caribbean director. “This is a federal project being built with federal funds that’s required by federal law to go through a complete environmental review.

The conservation world lost one of its guiding lights on Wednesday when renowned primatologist Jane Goodall passed away at 91.

Over 65 years studying chimpanzees in the wild, Goodall proved that primates are a lot like people. But her impact goes far beyond chimps. 🧵
