Biomass generation is expected to expand to 20.7 billion kWh this year, up from 20.5 billion kWh in 2024. This uptick will hopefully make a dent in the growing wood waste crisis.

Each year, California's biomass facilities receive more than 6.5 million tons of wood and agricultural waste. To put that into perspective, it would fill the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium over 25 times!

Earlier this month, CARB and officials from multiple air districts toured the Wadham biomass facility to learn about the plant's use of agricultural waste to create renewable power and reduce emissions compared to open burning of the waste.

CalFire has suspended burning in several counties due to potential fire hazards. CalFire suggests choosing alternatives for the wood waste "like chipping or hauling it to a biomass energy or green waste facility."
