Marilda Dhaskali, Senior Agriculture and Land-use Policy Officer, BirdLife Europe: “Today the EU parliament chose, once again, to set farming and farmers up for total failure. We call on Member States and the European Commission to immediately stop this dangerous rollback for nature."
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
- 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 by pushing through yet another round of hasty and unclear changes.

- At a time of record fires and droughts, we should be helping farmers to adapt to the climate crisis and work with nature, not gutting the very rules that protect it.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
Why?
- 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 for polluting and destructive farming practices to operate in the heart of protected areas.,

- 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗨 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 by removing the obligation to take measures against soil erosion.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
We don’t need less rules, we need to focus on properly implementing the rules we have and support farmers that are acting for nature.

This vote is irresponsible and a dangerous step backward for Europe’s environment, climate, and food security.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
⚠️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆.⚠️

Once again, this assault on environmental safeguards is being sold as “simplification.” It’s not simplification, it’s dismantling. And it’s a betrayal of both nature and farmers.

Once again on the streets of Brussels with @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social @natuurpunt.bsky.social @natagora.bsky.social for the #ClimateMarch

Whatever toxic lies from east and west, we face an existential crisis and must deal with it.

Nature is our best ally against climate chaos.

Dear MS Politicians + MEPs @europarl.europa.eu:
Please start making noise about the #LIFE program. The @ec.europa.eu proposal is insufficient, we need dedicated money in the #MFF (ECF/NRP) to #RestoreNature!

💚 Last week, we gathered in Poland for an inspiring meeting with our Partners. The main topic? Agriculture.🌾

Farmland bird populations in Europe have dropped by 60% in just 40 years. At BirdLife, we’re pushing for a food system that feeds people, supports farmers, and protects nature.

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗺𝗻𝗶𝗕𝗨𝗦! 🚌

We've been driving around Brussels in an actual omniBUS because the European Commission has been driving a giant Omnibus of proposals themselves.

When it comes to nature, simplification doesn’t mean easier rules. It means weaker rules.

✨ We are bringing back nature to one of Türkiye’s largest coastal wetlands: the Gediz Delta. ✨

Our partner Doğa Derneği is already working with local communities to make this future a reality.

With 60 ratifications, the treaty opens the door to create more Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the high seas. That means more safe spaces for seabirds & ocean life.

Governments need to make sure now that they protect the blue of today, so we still have a blue in the future. We are watching 👀
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
What are the high seas?

They’re waters that “don’t belong to anyone”

Until now, there were no binding rules to protect marine life here, leaving them vulnerable to industrial fishing & deep-sea mining.

We are tired of seeing wildlife blamed for human mistakes.

Europe needs policies that protect nature. Enough scapegoating.

#Cormorants #RestoreNature
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
Cormorants have as much right to eat fish as we do, and they also support ecosystems by recycling nutrients, helping maintain the ecological balance in our seas and rivers.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
But the truth is that Cormorants are not the cause of fish decline. The real threats are human-made. Overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, and dams all contribute to the massive fish stock decline but are not sufficiently addressed in the debate.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
Managing the species’ populations across Europe would be unlikely to work on the ground. Research has shown that reducing Cormorant numbers would have no proportional effect on local conflicts, because, as opportunistic predators, they are drawn to areas where fish is abundant.
birdlifeeurope.bsky.social
Today, Sweden, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Romania, and Slovakia launched a new attack on the protected bird, requesting:

• To list the Great Cormorant as a huntable species;

• To coordinate “management measures”: oiling eggs and destroying nests during breeding season.
