The bigger question is since she's actually a DHS employee that DOJ is borrowing to support the understaffed AUSA office, did she ever even take any of the same oaths of office that an AUSA would? Did she have the same training?
February 5, 2026 at 8:09 AM
She is not employed by DOJ. She works for DHS as part of OPLA. She was assigned to the AUSA office in DOJ on detail. Very different baseline situation where her work is administrative law that she can probably now return to. She was in over her head but this isn't her job.

Wait, isn't she an ICE attorney assigned to work with the DOJ on detail? The obligations still stand, but I think it's important to recognize this is someone whose experience is in administrative law. Lot of JAGs a year out of law school in that office now who also don't know what they're doing.

This is insane. I remember being in Medford and being mad that they had a two-way contra-flow bike lane on a downtown street and Corvallis still doesn't have any downtown bike lanes!

Is this really what happens to people who get DUII in Oregon? It definitely does not seem like it. We have no jail here in Benton County, so it seems like if you just don't show up for trial they'll let you plead to a misdemeanor reckless driving as long as you pinky promise to show up next time.

" think habitual speeding and reckless driving offenses should be treated with the same kind of seriousness that DUI/DWAI offenses are"

So, diversion program for first offense? Then community service? Then slightly more community service? Unless you have a decent attorney. Then no consequences.

I do a 14 pounder for two people (cure and smoke the breast and slice thin for a month of leftovers). I can spatchcock a chicken in like 3 minutes. Takes me an hour to portion out a turkey. I feel like I need to find the joints to make it possible, I can't cut through almost any bones, shears or no.

I wish someone would tell human drivers that! I think you get my point. Commercial deployment will involve compromise and we're not sure what the limits should be on that. I don't think 'better than a human' should be acceptable. But my 'death penalty for right hooks' idea also gained no traction.
November 20, 2025 at 6:43 AM
Exactly! It's not simple. And there's not even competition yet! I can see it now. The day that revenue will depend on which AV software gives cyclists the least clearance to fall over in the bike lane (required by Oregon law!). At least the AVs will weigh less than an electric F150...
November 20, 2025 at 6:32 AM
When a human driver is going 10 over the speed limit and kills someone, they're not charged with manslaughter because so is everyone else, so that can't be considered negligent. When a coder deliberately makes a change that kills more people, we'll treat that the same way, as long as AVs kill fewer.
November 20, 2025 at 5:51 AM
Perhaps it's more that it feels like the fight would be over. We've asked and urged that authorities hold irresponsible, distracted, lawbreaking drivers accountable and that hasn't happened. By saying that AVs will kill people, are we also saying that we can't hold human drivers to account?

I think this is an unfortunate case of Traeger trying to shoehorn a recipe that won't work for their product. Chicken should be smoked at 325 MINIMUM. You won't render the fat under the skin otherwise. Spatchcock to avoid overcooking the breast.

Part of the problem here is that the most obvious and efficient form of fitness--riding a bike--has somehow become left-coded. Me, riding around on my $50 bike, in my Ariats, hoping another geriatric POTUS doesn't bend the knee to a Saudi monarch for affordable gas is anti-masculine, apparently.

Jesus christ I just looked at your post history. What a wingnut. We're talking about North America here. House Sparrows have no business being here. Keep your house sparrow propaganda in the Old World where it belongs.
April 22, 2025 at 3:57 AM
It's not debated that House Sparrows compete with native species for cavity space and their presence increases native mortality. Neither is the method I described that rare, either. Do you really think it's greatly exaggerated to say that this "can" happen?

Would try to confirm they're not Juncos, but if not, and if you're interested in helping native birds, there's a good discussion here as to why manual cervical dislation is most humane and ethical method for control:

They are not native, having been introduced in New York in the 1850s. They compete with cavity nesting native species like bluebirds, chickadees, and swallows and can be brutal about it. They can peck through the skull of nestlings or defending adults over time to attack the brain during takeover.

Also Dark-eyed Junco/Spotted Towhee = good. House Sparrow = bad.
April 21, 2025 at 1:31 AM
Without knowing too much context, this could be Dark-eyed Junco, Spotted Towhee, or a House Sparrow. Leaning toward Junco if it's a more treed, less-dense environment. House sparrows typically look for cavities where I am, but will nest on the ground in denser environments.

Sports accounts have been the slowest to move over. As a White Sox fan, I would much rather my thread include more non-White Sox sports content for the next [until Jerry dies] years, but you're all I've got, so I'm latching on. Are you considering covering the NFL by chance?

Zero times. Expelling waste on a plane creates an excessive downstream carbon cost, and its unreasonable to bother people when you're sitting in patrician class (the obviously superior window seat). Just hold it until you reach the ground, you charlatan.
