this was originally posted in april, but here's some commentary that i've never posted ^_^

The placement of lilies in each corner of the image is a reference to the rose frames in Revolutionary Girl Utena. While usage of the frames in the show itself could have a dozen different meanings, I chose to pair the frame in this painting with an image resembling flash photography.

Photographs are fallible, imperfect attempts at preserving memory. Sometimes you remember more than what an image tells you. Other times, photos build mythologies in your memory, shifting with age and transforming the more they are viewed and remembered.

In my native language, the phrase "sayang sekali" speaks to both love and regret. "I love you dearly" and "what a waste" in the same breath.

Between the four figures depicted here, only Ariane has a visibly open eye. I'll leave the rest up to interpretation.
