Russia only conscripted people to the front early in the war, for a good while now they're only using volunteers (ok there might be some coercing but theoretically).

I'm also an engineer, I brought up academia precisely because the first thing I thought about when I read that liberals are not "data obsessed" and don't live in reality is not at all representative of my experiences during my studies.

Of course Nazis were strongly anti communist, but they toned down this rhetoric a lot from 39 to 41 and as I said, it's a fact that Stalin did not know that war with germany was coming in the general timeframe that it did, and therefore the red army wasn't prepared.
