Mael sat up from the couch. The evening's joy was obscured by morning fog and the lingering effects of Mael's sleep debt. Exhaustion leadens their arms and legs. There is no headache today, just an enduring sense of being tired. Mael stares at the quilt. It is a storybook, leading Mael down dark and lonely paths. Less a storybook, more an autobiography written by two sets of hands.

Alriighttt, initial draft done! This is more like an outline, if anything. To get a sense of what I mean, here is a snippet! The name is a placeholder and so are the pronouns.
Samuel is sitting in his bookshop alone, staring into the middle distance, bored in the quiet light of the day as people walk past his shop's large display window. Motes of dust float through the light beams. It is dusty and dark and cozy. A customer enters the shop. The door bell chimes. The customer wears a trench coat and a brimmed hat, but otherwise the details of the person don't matter. Samuel is happy for a customer if only because it distracts him from his dissociation/zoning out/thoughts. However, they don't really need any help and answers that they're browsing when Samuel asks. To occupy himself, he flips through the newspaper, which then lets his mind wander. Maybe the bookshop was something the both of them were supposed to open together. And so it

I just clung to the rafter and I saw in one great recollection all my victims, the scum of Paris, scraped up from its gutters, and I knew the madness of the course I'd chosen, and the lie of it, and what I really was. What a sublime idiocy that I had dragged that paltry morality with me, striking down the damned ones only—seeking to be saved in spite of it all? What had I thought I was, a righteous partner to judges and executioners of Paris who strike down the poor for crimes that the rich commit every day?
