Alias muses, "Standing next to you is some kinda nostalgic, Bartholomew. Dunno why, though. We just met!" Bartholomew agrees. "Erm... sure? Why are we still talking..." Dan looms behind Bartholomew, exhaling cigarette smoke at the back of his head. The joke is that Dan was originally 6'5", but has been canonically made taller over the years by his creator, but Alias has been his friend through the whole journey. I guess, more pointedly, what I've been feeling lately is that we all resent it, so... what are we gonna do about it? How do we, as users, creators, audiences, effect change upon the monolith to allow ART to be produced, and not just asset slop? Transparency & deeper conversation feels like step 1.

Agree entirely, you put it better! Though I do also feel it's a part of the larger issue regarding the way we have been made to use the internet re: there are 3 platforms, and so that's where we go. 😔 and now that they're partnering with big IP... worried about how it will further warp the landscape

True! They also need to be able to speak openly without fearing consequences from their 'employer'. I feel like US consumers are genrally sympathetic toward artists when they hear how they are treated because artists provide the product they love - not the company.

just strikes me as needless gatekeeping and victim blaming. We need labor revolution for contract and independent artists if we want to see the truly divine art that is being stifled and suffocated by capitalism and poverty.
End rant. I gotta go back to making my comics for the capitalist machine.

The reason webtoon gets a LOT more flak online is because it has gentrified a space that was originally considered the 'wild west' for self publishing and webcomics. It rubs people the wrong way - hell, I feel it too. But telling artists not to be paid to make original stories by any means necessary

Keep in mind that I'm one of those Webtoon contracted artists. I wanted to take this job so I could actually see firsthand how the meat is made. Now I have - and honestly, it's not much different than every other "more respectable" avenue (re: GNs) for making comics.

It's all about labor issues.

An act passed in 1935 is what lets publishers take advantage of us - they don't have to EMPLOY us to make their books because we're fighting for scraps. That is why "webtoon bad" - for the same reason why every Graphic Novel deal is laughable amounts, but you take it anyway to put food on the table.

The true issue at the center if all comic problems in the USA, I believe, is that we can't fucking unionize as independent contractors, and THAT is the drum we should be beating every fucking day as comic professionals made to beg for scraps at the middle grade table.

Webtoon takes advantage of the lack of comic artists' labor rights as contractors. It is a labor issue. I'm tired of the conversation around it being a vague "avoid at all costs, they exploit you!!" Okay. So do the animation studios we work for. So do traditional graphic novel & comic publishers.
