from the Thorn-tailed Rayadito that they were previously classified as. These guys are far enough from the mainland that they no longer breed with the Thorn-taileds, which has led to them being genetically different as well. I guess they're so new that the IUCN hasn't listed them...

odds are pretty good that you can spot them at Hosmer’s Grove on Haleakalā on Maui during the māmane bloom; just listen for the metallic sounding vocalizations!  While lacking the scarlet plumage of adults, juvenile ‘i’iwi have their own colorful yellow/brown/black mottled feathers...

The largest breeding colony in Oregon is on Haystack Rock (Goonies, anyone?) in Cannon Beach.

west coast US states have them listed ranging from sensitive to endangered while Japan has them listed as a vulnerable species.  These guys are pelagic and spend most of their lives at sea on the Pacific Ocean, only coming in to land to breed.

They're also able to eat fruits that are too toxic for other species to consume. Their habit of eating clay helps neutralize the toxins.  Yum...?

IUCN (Belize, Guatemala, a small area in Southern Mexico, Honduras/Nicaragua, and Costa Rica) with larger populations in the northern half of South America.  Macaws are the largest of the parrots... they can measure up to nearly 3 feet from beak to tail!
