Why did you try to draw an orange mustache on poor Richard Robson's face? JEALOUS MUCH?

;)
bjkeefe.bsky.social
I hope they phrase it as 2017-2020. (Don't give him a chance to weasel out by saying "Obama!")
bjkeefe.bsky.social
Change it to 70 and I'll endorse.

;)

Great post.

I confess to feeling like your old friend, too. I feel guilty about this, but sometimes it's about the only thing that will let me get to sleep at night.

Jumper Donald?

If that's an artist that everyone younger than me knows, I apologize.
bjkeefe.bsky.social
I like that the individual reporter's name is listed on the opinion.

It really is amazing how nonetheless Stephen Miller and his ilk will spend all day long screeching about how the "radical left Democrat Party" is so powerful that military action is the only option left.

I bet you're a big Casey Babb fan.

You're an idiot if you fall for Babb's argument, which Republicans have deployed since at least the days of the Clarence Thomas hearings.

A useful illustration of the limits of liberal identity politics.

Can "AI fundies" be far behind?

;)

3/3 And now I have 2 OEDs, b/c no one would take my late parents' copy when I was cleaning out their house, and I couldn't bear to throw it in the garbage.
bjkeefe.bsky.social
2/3 (sorry!) Wiktionary is just too good. Not *as* good, but too good in the sense of "almost always, that's all that I need." Just as you did not want to walk downstairs just now, multiplied by every day forever.
bjkeefe.bsky.social
Ah ... (*wipes tear*) ...

I got an AH as a gift in the early '70s and loved it for the next forty years. In the late '90s, I found a nearly mint OED in a used book store. Buying that for $100 made me feel like, "At last, now I am truly an adult."

Haven't looked at either in years. 1/2

@meredithshiner.com

Minor bit of administrivia: Just read your fine article* and noticed that your author thumbnail bio only has a Twitter link. Esp since you don't use that site anymore, I'd encourage you to replace it with a Bluesky link.

From @meredithshiner.com, via @michael-berube.bsky.social (on FB):

"The truth is that Democrats can pay a million consultants to come up with a million different talking points on health care subsidies. They can keep holding press conferences in the Senate studio like every other press [1/2]
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

[2/2] conference before it, talking to the same reporters, pretending like we live in a redeemable timeline where if they just keep on acting like it’s 2007, we might fall through a time portal that makes it so."

Even as an atheist, I've always loved the line, "From your lips to God's ears."

(To be directed at @ericswalwell.bsky.social, not you, in case it's not obvious.)
bjkeefe.bsky.social
Was wondering if its etymology was something like "triple ground" but Wkt says that it come from the Latin *triturare*, ("thresh").

Wonderful word! Thanks!

2/2 "Those people will never know how hard that was."

Pepitone tells this in his autobiography, iirc. He said that the manager rewarded MM for his homer by letting him have the rest of the day off, but made Pep play the whole nine innings.
bjkeefe.bsky.social
Had not heard that one.

My fave MM line came when he and Joe Pepitone staggered into the clubhouse, drunk and hungover, right before an exhibition game. First at-bat, MM hit a monster homerun, trotted very slowly around the bases, got back to the dugout, squinted at the crowd, and said, 1/2

Preach!

I've been trying to pitch this to ... let us say ... less altruistic types since forever: even as a pure, coldhearted economic calculation, it makes sense.

Similarly for spending money in communities in ways that eventually lead to reduced crime: it always pays off.
bjkeefe.bsky.social
I can't wait to find out what he's being honored *for*.

2/2 "If we wait until the abuses become severe and widespread enough to register in our standard analytic tools, it will be too late."

Well said, @brianbeutler.bsky.social.

Also: "We need to remind ourselves, constantly, that in the median experience of tyranny, life is largely unchanged. Even the median experience of those being tyrannized can be free of intolerable forms of oppression." 1/2

2/2 with the perspective on the background not changing, or weird hand stuff.

Now, though, about the only way to tell them apart is that the AI-gen ones are "more perfect", for lack of a better term. Disturbingly, they're slowly trending toward younger-looking, too. Giant boobs, but baby faces.
