It's only too bad scientists don't have that kind of precise knowledge about or control over the genome. Yes you can screen for disease markers - for some horrific ones, this is already done. No, you can't make your child taller/smarter. Disgusting scam preying on people in a vulnerable situation.

The same thing could easily be said about the US.

I agree wrt your first post, but there is a real European identity with a sense of community and shared values. It's not a totally cohesive identity, its strength varies, etc, but so what? American or Canadian aren't cohesive identities either and state/provincial identities often take priority.

As a Norwegian and European but not a member of the EU, I disagree. The European identity has been fostered by the EU but it is older than that. But I know the two are often conflated and there aren't many European countries outside anymore. This doesnt trouble me if no one denies my European-ness.

It's often or mostly a stereotyping device, yes. Except for Europeans, where it's a real, shared identity. Sometimes the meaning is undoubtedly "people like that", but Europeans should be thick-skinned enough to take that.

But it's monorail? Afaik there aren't a lot of disused monorail networks lying about so they'l must be talking about new-builds. The savings, if any, must lie in the much lighter infrastructure needs (single rail, narrow rail bed).

Funny how they one, assume this place is overflowing with minors, and two, said fictional minors must be shielded from learning art history lest they become better people.

We should be breaking more windows, analysts say. "If everyone smashed just one pane of glass a year, boom, that's $10b to the economy right there."

It's the dressing IMHO. The kebab tradition was imported from Germany but it became better than in Germany. It's been my impression that the kebab revolution was driven by Kurdish refugees/immigrants. Had my first doner in Oslo in 1997 and I miss Norwegian style kebabs terribly.

Some brief googling suggests analysts use the term to describe NV's circular investment shenanigans, which seem to involve intermediaries for keeping debts off balance sheets and booking revenues up-front. Though NV is backed by real products, it's all very Enron. Linked article explains.
