Castling was introduced only 700 years ago, Chess 960 in the last few decades. Whatever this is it’s not the first “patch” of chess in two millennia.

This is some of the best journalism I’ve read in a long, long time. Depth, detail, perspective, prose, indignation. Well done Maureen Tcacik.

What Did Ada Lovelace's Program Actually Do?
In 1843, Ada Lovelace published the first nontrivial program. How did it work?

Correct.

They replaced an unappealing game with a series of unappealing games. This is the same tinkering the NBA did with the Dunk contest- new editions have just made it worse.

Obviously, I don’t want to equate legit NSFW type content with transphobic or racist content. But from the perspective of creating a shared environment around shared content standards, this thing is beautiful. What Rudy and his crew are doing with this tech needs to be more widely imitated here.

Blacksky is a new paradigm for social media as far as dealing with the complications of open social media content/participation, I really like it. There’s a huge tech debate RN on Bluesky about how to deal with transphobic troublemakers, and I’m like, stop ignoring this innovation over here.

Reddit. Of course. As soon as I saw your answer I was like “r/scifi would probably work”. And it does! I feel like I wasted your time but thank you anyway for putting me on the right track.

Same.

Man that song is fire but you have fast forward through half the track to get to the real song.

15 drink limit is for the “can’t drink all day unless you start in the morning” folks.

Indeed.

Muting what one dislikes is good, what’s better is doing it as a community. A core value add of Blacksky is blocking racism and misogynoir so that we *don’t* have to manually do it. It was never “complete access” as you said earlier, setting bounds on content is in line with what we signed up for

This is the great thing about ATProto/Bluesky- labeling content, curating feeds & communities so that people can ONLY see what they want. Nothing is stopping people from creating a feed here for folks who want to post themselves having sex. Although I’d argue Only Fans & Pornhub do it better. 🤷🏽‍♂️
December 15, 2024 at 11:05 PM
And what I like about this update is that the Blacksky feed now mutes that sexual content for its general users. I’m concerned about *their* burden, not explicit posters. Also, people who want to post explicit content need to shoulder the burden of making a feed so those who desire it can see it.

I get it. You develop a great tech innovation, make it widely available for free, and then AWS comes in and eats your lunch. I mean literally eats your lunch, even though it makes a giga-billion dollars per year and could easily pay you a fee. So you close access and the OSS community gets burned.

Prime is obnoxious but has some solid commentary, also is a Neovim lover. Speaking of Neovim I found a Zig guy that walked through how to use Kickstart.nvim to get a decent Neovim experience. Of course it was painful but I’m now able to code on a Linux box with that setup. It’s almost…pleasant?
December 15, 2024 at 5:33 AM
Thanks for the suggestion. To lessen the pain I’ve already found a Vim cheatsheet and a few videos. My main goal is to incrementally make using it less painful.
