According to multiple NYT sources, it wasn’t even military personnel at Fort Bliss that fired an anti-drone laser at alleged cartel drones. It was CBP who used the weapon on loan from DoD against a child’s party balloon they mistook for a drone. The Pentagon gave CBP an anti-aircraft weapon.

In case you’re thinking surely there are some kind of safety protocols in place to use these things on civilian skies before we hand them over the CBP—lol no. bsky.app/profile/tyle...
The Pentagon has long been developing anti-drone weapons meant for use in war zones where they can control air traffic. But the DoD hasn’t yet figured out how to safely deploy them within crowded civilian skies. That didn’t stop them loaning some out to CBP to shoot off over Texas.
