What does it cost to make history? Sleepless nights. Endless miles. Countless conversations, threats - and sometimes, everything you've got. Love, Joy, & Power: Tools for Liberation is a powerful documentary that captures the highs and lows of organizing in 2020.

The attack on Section 2 is part of a decades-long GOP strategy to dismantle the Voting Rights Act and lock in power. From Shelby County v. Holder to Brnovich v. DNC, the far-right Court has chipped away at protections for voters of color.

This case could be the final blow.

A new Fair Fight Action x Black Voters Matter Fund report breaks down what’s at stake and who stands to lose. If Section 2 goes, 30% of the Congressional Black Caucus and 11% of the Hispanic Caucus could lose their seats. This ruling could drag us back to a pre-1965 America.

If Section 2 is struck down, Republicans could gain up to 27 new safe House seats—19 directly from the loss of Section 2 protections.

That’s enough to cement one-party control of the U.S. House for decades and silence millions of Black, Latino, and other voters of color.

The Court will decide whether creating a second majority-Black district in Louisiana—meant to fix a proven Voting Rights Act violation—is “unconstitutional” because it considers race.

They’re asking if fixing racial discrimination can be treated as discrimination itself.

The Supreme Court will rehear Louisiana v. Callais on Oct 15—a case that could reshape voting rights nationwide. At stake is Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the core protection that stops racial discrimination in redistricting. If it falls, one party could control Congress for a generation. 🧵

This isn't just about maps and numbers. This is about erasing Black political power that we fought centuries to build. This is about locking in minority rule for generations.

The alarm is sounding. We must protect Section 2 and the Voting Rights Act.

BVM Co-Founder LaTosha Brown said it best, doing so would "clear the path for a one-party system where power serves the powerful and silences the people."

Section 2 prohibits racial gerrymandering when it dilutes minority voting power. Eliminating it would open the door for Republicans to redistrict 27 total seats in their favor ahead of the midterms - 19 of those directly tied to overturning Section 2.

Our new report with Fair Fight Action reveals what's at stake: If Section 2 is eliminated, Republicans could redraw up to 19 House seats to favor their party and crush minority representation in Congress. This would all but guarantee Republican control of Congress.

During the 2018–2019 shutdown, many Black workers had to turn to food banks, payday loans, or gig work just to survive.

We cannot afford to repeat that harm.
blackvotersmatterfund.org
Every week of a government shutdown = $5 billion in delayed paychecks.

That’s money not going into Black-owned businesses, local shops, and neighborhoods that depend on federal workers’ steady income.
blackvotersmatterfund.org
Wait times at agencies like Social Security already stretch into months.

For Black seniors and disabled folks who rely on timely benefits, a shutdown means even longer delays.
blackvotersmatterfund.org
More than 300,000 federal jobs are already at risk this year.

Black workers are overrepresented in many frontline roles — and those are always the first to face cuts.

A shutdown makes it worse.
blackvotersmatterfund.org
This means missed rent, food insecurity, and added stress for families already facing racial wealth gaps.

Shutdowns don’t punish politicians, they punish people.
blackvotersmatterfund.org
A government shutdown doesn’t fix problems, it makes them worse. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees are locked out or forced to work without pay.

Since Black workers make up nearly 20% of the federal workforce, our communities are hit especially hard when paychecks stop.

"Voters were struggling with an affordability crisis but had given up hope a mayor could do anything about it. Zohran wasn't scared of naming villains and proposing solutions."

The National Guard won’t make Memphis safer, they’ll just ramp up violence and target Black and immigrant communities.

Real safety means investing in people, not punishment. Memphis is safer when we support youth, mental health & community programs. #FreeThe901 #Free901 @blackvotersmatterfund.org

This past Friday we held Libations & Conversations, a gathering to hold space for conversations about mental health.

Supporting Black mental health is essential for building real power in our communities, and it’s just as vital for fueling the creativity and expression that move us forward.

We must stay vigilant because when funding comes with strings attached or political agendas, our institutions become vulnerable. We need to protect that while watching closely for any attempts to compromise their missions.
