Beautiful shot! I learned recently that the ancient people who planned Kyoto designed these channels (in part) with the purpose to carry prosperity from its rivers across the city, based on fengshui principles.

Beautiful shot! I learned recently that these alleyways in Kyoto were designed with the mythological purpose of capturing good qi for the people living there (the thinking was that the narrow lanes helped slow down the flow of "energy").

They're called inuyarai, or "dog fences." They're barricades at the base of buildings.
