Hey, I'm Mario! In case you don't know me, here's a pinned thread to change that.

My two arguably biggest passions are video games (that includes #gamedev) and music. Luckily, I've had the opportunity to combine the two! (🧵)

Neues Retro Review!

Sowas macht kein "Held".

I wouldn’t bet on it, sadly. 🙁 I’ve confronted them about it over 8 months ago, and all they did was block me and continue as if nothing happened.
blakeinc.bsky.social
Tbh I was kind of surprised it didn't snowball

Art theft this blatant should be called out, and we shouldn't rest until crumpie has no platform whatsoever anymore

how do you feel as part of the pixel art avengers
blakeinc.bsky.social
Or they'll just cut out the middleman and generate the AI slop they trace over themselves.
blakeinc.bsky.social
Absolutely! Either traced or just shameless recolors from other pixel artists.

I'm convinced there is a handful of original pieces on their account tops – and for those we can't find via reverse image search, we just haven't looked hard enough.
blakeinc.bsky.social
Seems like they deleted their AI-traced Meowth over in the other place. Must've hurt with 52K likes and thousands of retweets.

Now the usual patterns begins: once they're caught, they delete the images we've proven are stolen, lay low for a while, then continue as if nothing happened. Infuriating.

I don't get this. They seem to be very actively engaging with their followers, and building some sort of community, esp. over in the other place.

Why would you do that if it's all built on stolen art? Where's the benefit?
blakeinc.bsky.social
100 % agree, great thread!

Also wanna note that there is merit in making game design decisions that align with your overall vision of the game, even if its uncomfortable.

Silent Hill 2's deliberately clunky combat is meant to make the player feel powerless and greatly contributes to the atmosphere

There's some traditional game design advice that rotates around satisfying players and removing feel-bad moments. I think a lot of that advice is stuff I've taken to heart and continue to do so in my own game design journey.

However . . . I think this can also get in the way of great design. [1]

Yep, their "artwork" usually falls into one of three categories:
- Traces of AI-generated images on Pinterest
- Traces of traditional artwork without credit for the original artists
- Lazy palette swaps of other pixel art with minor edits (color, composition, background)

This is so egregious.

As this is getting some traction (thanks!), please check out @sabakudoesart.bsky.social who not only did the original research, but is a brilliant (and original!) pixel artist.

Pixelart illustration of two boys in suits sitting on a bench in a dark moody room. They are illuminated by the window behind them. They look very deep into each others eyes. I think they may be in love! This image shows two pixelart illustrations:

On the right is a pixelart illustration of a bald pale character with dark eyes and yellow pupils. He is fairly muscular and wears some leather armor in combination with a black cape. The fur of a muzzled creature is attached to the capes collar and the character is wearing it around his shoulders. He also has a big dark red axe with golden details in his right hand. On the same image are icons and text that are similar to the status screen in an rpg, with stats for attack and so on. The Attributes section says "Undead" and "Ruthless".

The right illustration of the two part image is a pixelart that simulates an ingame screen of an action rpg, similar to "Dark Souls" or "Elden Ring". It shows the described character now from the back, holding his axe and standing in something that looks like dark ruins that are overgrown with grass and a tree, that is arching over an exit that floods the ruins with light.
On the top right are two bars for values like health and maybe magic or stamina. In the lower left corner are four item slots for health potions, the Weapon and another for a magical item or a spezial ability. pixelart of a bath room in top down perspective, with two woman chilling in a bath tub. The room has a toilet, a sink and some more decorative stuff. mockup for testing a pixel tileset in mostly white, black and red. The scene shows the crime scene of a shooting, maybe, in front of a café.

I wanna be personally responsible for all the bad writing in my games, thank you very much. Why would I let a large learning model have any of the fun of wilfully inspiring a groan?

I've said it many times before and Andrew Cuomo is making me say it again: we don't have a cancellation problem. We have never had a cancellation problem. To the contrary, we have a problem that "disgrace" is a very temporary embarrassment— an brief entr'acte more than an intermission.
