hopefully they can find a less obnoxious form of cope than what is described in that article, but I don't think there's any solution to the incel problem that doesn't involve cope, doubling down on calling them losers isn't going to cut it
January 21, 2026 at 4:02 PM
it's cope, but I honestly think the popularisation of "cope" as a jibe is a very bad thing, and that cope is actually essential to a functioning society, given the number of problems for which there will never be a solution. A world without cope would be a dystopia!

possible million dollar ai companion idea - endless ai version of the mouth from Not I
January 20, 2026 at 4:15 PM
I think it's a Waiting For Godot type thing - "Don't touch me! Don't question me! Don't speak to me! Stay with me!"

It feels like a lot of the ppl in the replies there would ironically be the perfect market for an ai companion whose personality spec was 'loser who socialises with ai companions, so you have someone you can feel superior to', but maybe that's just another layer of projection

not just make up a person but make up a person and congratulate themselves for all the various ways they are better than that made-up person.

I love the way the tv series introduces Smiley by showing him running away from Nigel Stock and then getting bullied into going to lunch with him, before slowly revealing this hidden flintiness - Oldman too obviously a hardman from the start for that sort of thing to work

I think in the early years there would also sometimes be competitions or promotional features that would be supposedly written by Ro-Jaws, in the same way that Tharg wrote the editorials

Mek-Quake seemed to exist in the same 'universe' as Tharg and the 2000ad script/art/etc droids iirc? I think I remember readers writing in to point out continuity errors and Tharg replying to say that the droid responsible had been sent to Mek-Quake as punishment.

than freeze him again
January 5, 2026 at 6:04 PM
also they both have the survivor of the old world frozen in a coffin like device being tended to by three robots, but in The Last American the president has got someone else to carry the can and deal with the mess he left, which I guess connects to Dredd's decision to sentence Booth to 'life' rather
January 5, 2026 at 6:04 PM
(The Last American is interesting to compare to the Cursed Earth as another Mike McMahon drawn strip depicting a post-apocalyptic America, but is a very different visual style, claustrophobic and eerily deserted in contrast to all the mad activity and space of The Cursed Earth)
January 5, 2026 at 6:01 PM
the Last American is about an American who finds himself separated from all other Americans and the America he knew, adjusting to this strange landscape, accompanied by a robot that only knows of America via the tv and pop culture it has consumed

feel like a lot of stuff Wagner wrote makes sense in this context - The Bogie Man is about (a guy who thinks he's) an American having an adventure in America, but is actually/incongruously in Scotland, and his version of America is from movies
January 5, 2026 at 5:57 PM
iirc Dredd creator John Wagner is the son of an American father and a Scottish mother, was raised in the US until he was 12 and then moved to Scotland, always figured that this must have had a big effect on Dredd and Mega City One, Wagner having both an insider and outsider's perspective

according to this reddit post buzz is stuff like Staind and Puddle of Mudd, which is very much not the future I was promised

though I am grudgingly impressed by how much they've managed to make the Anthony Michael Hall one look like Anthony Michael Hall

don't want to become the kind of person who thinks everything used to be better in the old day, but my late grandmother used to collect these pig figurines and it's hard to feel like there hasn't been a decline over the last 30 years

It's true that Brian Bolland is best known for visually stunning single images, but I think my favourite thing he ever did was his Mr Mamoulian strips (obviously a very different style of single page gag cartooning than the Beano/Buster type stuff Walter the Wobot was harking after, but still)
