From your post, I’m going to surmise that chlamydia was more rampant in the 1960s & 1970s

I had actually never heard of Morgan Bulkeley until today. He seems like he was definitely a questionable selection. I believe Rob Neyer pointed out in one of his articles that the first questionable selection the BBWAA made was electing Herb Pennock in 1948

I’ve always supported his HOF candidacy but I agree he probably won’t ever make it in

Kent did decent in BBWAA voting on crowded ballots. In recent years, the Era Committee has immediately voted in any non-PED tarnished candidate (save for the controversial Schilling) that has accrued roughly 40% or more on the bbwaa ballot (Morris, Trammell, L Smith, McGriff, and now Kent)

Fun Wilfong stuff: while playing for the 1980 Twins, he set the single season fielding pct for 2B at .995, breaking the fractionally-lower .995 mark Bobby Grich had set for the 1973 Orioles. In 1985, Grich reclaimed the record, posting a .997 figure while he & Wilfong were teammates on the Angels

Also, the HOF DOES NOT want anyone tied to PEDs to be voted in. Kent is viewed as clean, which helps

Two things that greatly helped Kent: he had the most career HR of any second baseman. And he won the NL MVP in 2000 (others on the ballot also won MVPs but werent a second baseman). The most HR for a position is the type of thing that reasonates with voters & sets him apart

Thank you so much!

I’m a “big Hall of Fame guy” but I admit the HOF may be getting too watered down at this point. Still, I’d rather see too many guys make it than not enough. Kent is just over my in/out line but I can see arguments made both for & against his inclusion

Since nobody jumped on the 1988 Topps lot, I will claim it. (I’m still at the same address)

He’s over the HOF line for me but just barely. He’s not a slam dunk, so I guess fittingly he was elected by the Era Committee

I’m always up for some 1983 Topps.
