One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

The fact that this is coming from a Labour govt, with no consideration of the implications for labor in the countries of origin, illustrates how vacuous and self-absorbed social democratic politics in the US and Western Europe have become.

Anyway, this turned into a ramble, but the whole point is that I think a lot of the discontent currently expressed in economic terms is only expressed that way because those are the only terms available. Taking it too literally & responding technocratically is a mistake. Deeper shit is afoot. </fin>

AI in education is causing students anxiety as they have no idea what institutions are doing about it, and nor do institutions know what students are doing with it

In the end, we no longer operate in a marketplace of ideas.
Platforms run a marketplace of feeling, where attention, not evidence, decides what rises. Emotional charge beats truth every time. Politics adapts to that logic, producing hollow performances instead of functional decisions.

And that means that democracy doesn't die in darkness, but in the light of a billion glowing screens.
