A little thing that disgruntles me is when people act like not understanding something is an especial form of disagreement. Instead of just saying someone is wrong they say "I don't understand how you can think that." You can't substantially disagree with something you haven't tried to understand.

If debates were ways of discerning truth, and not just rhetoric competitions, the losing side would change their mind.

That doesn't happen. Either both sides spin it as a win or the losing side says "hope we do better next time." Same reaction to seeing my favorite football team lose.

One of my most controversial opinions is that reading research papers to learn about something is a dumb guy inclination. What you're looking for is a book. But that takes too much time and challenges the reader to confront the author's bias because it isn't hidden behind clinical language.
