Two 3d printed tiktaalik skulls. On the left, smaller, white colored, mouth closed, facing camera. On the right, larger, tan colored, mouth propped open with a stick, facing right-ish. A 3d printed model for demonstrating the cranial kinesis (movement) of a hawk skull, with different parts in different colors. A musk deer (a deer-like animal with large upper fangs) skull, tan colored, facing left. Two 3d printed Lined Earwig designs. The earwig is an insect with a reddish head and thorax, a dark abdomen with pincers on the end, tan legs and a pair of tan stripes down the back. Each earwig has a 1-inch (2.5cm) split ring though the abdomen. The left design is facing upish, the right design is facing down. In between them is a US penny for scale.

The more I learn about fish the more interesting they are!

Not schools so much.

I have gotten orders from museums/nature centers and other organizations that do educational programming. Less so this last year tho, federal budget cuts had a big impact on many of those organizations.

No-stirrup work is great! Especially for building good habits when you're starting! I do think you need more than a week tho. 🤣

As per usual, I’m not organized enough for a daily drawing challenge, I’m sort of following one and combining prompts. This was “nocturnal” and “ocular” together in a moth caterpillar with eye markings. The regal moth and its caterpillar forms aren’t venomous

A colorful gouache painting of a real caterpillar: the teal and orange progeny of regal moths. Despite being brightly colored and super spiky, neither adult nor young are venomous. They just look scary.

Day 7 #Invertober2025 - Scaly foot gastropod (Chrysomallon squamiferum) 🐌

SNAIL. BYE.

Also, when riding bareback you do tend to put your feet further forward. It better matches your legs to the curve of the horse's shoulders. (Exact positioning depends on both the horse's and human's specifics.) A saddle is a horse-to-human adapter that puts you more upright, which is better balanced
blueappaloosa.bsky.social
That is interesting! I don't know their actual train of thought, but as someone who has ridden mostly bareback since they got their first horse, it is *great* for developing core strength and a good seat. A week probably isn't actually enough time tho.
blueappaloosa.bsky.social
This is much closer to how I ride. I suspect the "chair seat" may come from people not developing the proper core strength for all-day riding, but having to ride all day anyway. Kinda a crutch, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I dunno the exact history of it tho.
blueappaloosa.bsky.social
This is one of the places where I wouldn't tell someone they were doing it "wrong" if it was working for them. But I wouldn't teach riding this way.
blueappaloosa.bsky.social
There are different schools of riding. This is often referred to as a "chair seat". It's not "technically" correct for either English or Western riding... however it's pretty common in Western/stock-type riding. I suspect it may be more comfortable on long (multi-hour) rides.

Ok, I'll take the Unicorn book. And the Seahorse book from the earlier post if no one already has dibs.
blueappaloosa.bsky.social
If it gets me out of this "inability to read books" funk it might be worth it...
blueappaloosa.bsky.social
Oh no, I really don't need more books...but... Unicorns....
