They would presumably be too far out for a drone, probably a ballistic or cruise missile. A destroyer had to shoot down a houthi cruise missile last year, the first combat use of a CIWS that I'm aware of, and this is probably the first time a carrier has had to do evasive maneuvers since ww2

Not unless you have to, and apparently they did. Someone had to make the decision to put the crew at risk by turning hard enough to drag 23k pounds of jet AND the tug off the side, because they had little to no warning. Colossal fuck up, because something got passed the destroyers
