If you use Reddit you might like to know about fake subreddits: subreddits which have similar names to popular subs, but which are used to post astroturfing/ragebait content, with, naturally, complicit moderators.

Some weird stuff started up on reddit again during the previous election. These "imitation subreddits" would pop up. Long dead subreddits that have a name similar-enough to a currently popular subreddit will suddenly get a massive spike of activity while being botvoted and full of bot comments. They'd be used to push a lot of astroturfy content, or just stuff meant to get people riled up. r/Millenials was one of the more blatant ones, imitating r/Millennials(Two Ns), but it's fallen out of use since then. The one we're in right now, r/CringeTikToks is imitating r/TikTokCringe. It's almost always dominating the #1 post spot now when I open up reddit. This whole thing relies on people who use some variation of the "popular" feed. They'll post something, seed it with a ton of intial upvotes from a botnet so it gets to the front page and then people just see it automatically when they open up reddit and don't pay enough attention to see it's not the subreddit they thought it was. This way they can't be moderated like they would be if they use the normal subreddits. For fun, just check out r/Millenials (the fake one) and sort it by TOP: All Time. Have a look at what the posts are like and when they were made. It should basically all be a ton of highly upvoted posts from the middle of last year, but nothing before then. Do the same thing here for r/CringeTikToks. This one's newer, so it should only go back a few months.
