"Why a fox?": In japanese folklore, a fox is more powerful the more tails it has, that being nine. Izuku is also the ninth holder of OFA, so.. Each tail of blackwhip represents the past 8 predecessors, his normal tail representing himself. So hypothetically, if he loses a quirk, he loses a tail.
