Dr. Portman’s lab explores how genes and neural circuits shape behavior—especially how biological sex drives adaptive changes in C. elegans. Their work sheds light on mechanisms that may influence human neurological and psychiatric conditions.

His research investigates how sensory processing deficits contribute to psychosis-related psychopathologies, like schizophrenia. Using a visual "oddball" paradigm, Connor explores neuronal response patterns and how excitatory neurotransmission influences perception and adaptation.
