Shortly after the Gaza cease-fire deal in September, Mr. Trump held a meeting with Mr. Rubio, along with Mr. Vance; Steve Witkoff, the president’s special envoy for just about everything; and Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, who has no formal role in the U.S. government but whom the president relies on for complex negotiations. Mr. Trump told the men that they should seek to build on their accomplishment in the Middle East with a deal for Ukraine and Russia. That led to secret meetings in Miami with Kirill Dmitriev, Mr. Putin’s Harvard-trained economic envoy and the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. That meeting was followed by a quiet visit from Rustem Umerov, Mr. Zelensky’s national security adviser. People familiar with those meetings said Mr. Trump’s aides believed that the combination of Ukraine’s unfolding corruption scandal and Russia’s incremental battlefield gains put new pressure on Mr. Zelensky to cut a deal. But the one they ultimately drafted contained a lot more input from the Russians than from the Ukrainians.

I cannot be confident that I will make a difference. I am reminded, however, of what Senator Robert F. Kennedy said in 1966 about ending apartheid in South Africa: “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.” Enough of these ripples can become a tidal wave. And as Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney wrote, sometimes the “longed-for tidal wave of justice can rise up, and hope and history rhyme.” I want to do all that I can to make this such a time.

As it happens, shortly before the Trump administration’s failed efforts to secure a sword from the Eisenhower library, two other Eisenhower swords went on view in a temporary display at the Nixon library. According to a news release, they are on loan from Julie Nixon Eisenhower, a daughter of President Nixon, who married the grandson of President Eisenhower. They include a “Sword of Honor” given to him in 1947 by the City of London to honor his role as the Allied supreme commander during World War II, described by the Nixon library as being “treasured as a family heirloom.”

I suspect that left-leaning journalists and editors are migrating back to X not because of the ideological tenor of Bluesky but because they miss the attention arms race. If X-ism is preferable to Blueskyism, it’s because X users don’t have to work as hard to reach people. On the internet, a bigger megaphone is still considered a better one. Yet parsing the distinctions between Bluesky and X has a burgeoning air of futility. The truth is that text-dominated social networks are largely decaying across the board. According to Bluesky’s open-source data, the number of daily posters on the platform has been declining each month since its peak in January of this year, following Trump’s Inauguration (though it is still four times as large as it was last year). X has been forced to release some of its internal statistics owing to new technology regulation in the European Union; the data, from earlier this year, show that the site has lost around ten per cent of its European user base, around eleven million accounts, since August of 2024. Meta’s Threads app is growing, thanks to its ongoing support from Instagram, but since its launch, in 2023, it has not, at least by my recollection, generated a single major cultural moment or meme.
