Instead I draw, hoping to get in touch with someone, or I commission artists who I profoundly admire. I know it's not really the "right" way but It works for me.

Been there. Asked to write a whole DLC for a game. Did that in 6 months; the game never got a Game Designer because they were too focused on bigger projects. I did also some design.
DLC never got released even if the writing was complete and needed just proof reading.
