I think his Pinnochio is his best film but you really hit on it here. I usually ask my tattoo artist to put his movies on when I'm getting work done because they look great but have zero calories so I don't need to hear them. Maybe "tattoo parlor movie" is a genre kinda like "airplane movie".

An underlying message here is that it used to be fairly standard teenage thinking that whatever your parents liked was intrinsically lame. That isn't really the case anymore. (And in the 90s there were covers of Landslide that everyone loved)
