They failed to grasp the opportunity. Take advantage of the medium: proper linking, interactivity, user contributions (not just awful comments), etc. No excuse for them not doing so. The Guardian actually did some of this for a while, but they've sadly regressed to the lowest common slop of late.

Newspapers are THE example of how to do online wrong. Rather than adapt to the medium, they just decided to shit out as much worthless content as possible, chasing numbers. Push out divisive nonsense, shove ads on top, profit... until everyone wakes up to this nonsense and you've destroyed yourself.

This works, but only if 75% is enough to pay your day-to-day expenses. Fortunately, if you're in the UK, the base threshold is fairly generous, so you can judge whether you'll owe any tax beforehand!
