As usual, my thanks to

This image is one that I've been working on for a book about mythical creatures. This is a water nymph. I created her laying in the water on her back because I learned how to swim as an adult :) I was nervous to learn but when I was on my back I could float along the water feeling totally relaxed.

Artwork with a bird's eye view looking down at a family setting into their new home in the city with boxes all around. A girl and her dog kneel on the couch looking out the widow at their noisy new neighborhood with a promising green patch in between it all. A photo of Her, daddy and mommy sits on the end table, and Daddy looks on holding a box for unpacking.
A white bar along the bottom reads:

#kidlitartpostcard
Children’s book illustration of a scene at a county fair. In them magic can background are rides and buildings, silhouetted against an evening sky. In the foreground is a stack of straw bales. A boy sits on top of the bales, sharing his cotton candy with a prize winning goat. A little girl is lying on her back on top of the bales, playing with a teddy bear. Dad is sitting slouched against the base of the bales, dozing. His foot has knocked over a bucket of popcorn, and a prizewinning pig is munching on it. Two big trees frame the scene, and the whole painting is done in shades of blue, purple, and pink, emphasizing the evening light.

This unicorn created by Melizza Santram-Chernov is a representation of one of her possible spirit animals (hahaha). Like so many others I am paradoxical. In this case I'm both ethereal and grumpy at any given time.

👋🏼 Hello art directors and editors. Happy #KidLitArtPostcard day! Did you know I like to draw chickens? And quilts too? 😁 Check out my portfolio at kirstenmcgonigal.com to see what else I like drawing, and writing about too! I’m rep’d by @beccalangton.bsky.social of @da-childrens.bsky.social

Whimsical children’s book illustration showing a parade of chickens marching down a city street. The chicken in front carries a long flag made of red white and blue while squares, arranged in various configurations of Stars and Stripes. She is pulling a wagon with three chicks in it. Behind the chicks marches a hen wearing boots and carrying a drum, which she is beating as she marches. Behind her comes a duck, looking grouchy and pulling a cannon, on top of which stands a rooster, who looks very pompous as he blows into a golden horn.

I almost forgot to post my #KidLitArtPostcard for this month! (last month was my first one ever, and I'm trying to push myself consistently share my work 😅)

I'm building my #kidlit portfolio and trying out black+white illustration this month with some new techniques in procreate 🎨
Black and white illustration featuring four girls in a classroom. Three girls dressed as a doctor, ballerina, and a chef laugh at one girl on career day because she's dressed as a garbage collector.

In case anyone is looking for an actual summer book list, I recently wrote one for @bookriot.bsky.social!

It's short but all of the books do exist :)

I went into my library's database of Chicago area newspapers to confirm this isn't fake, and it's not.

@chicago.suntimes.com Why the hell are you using ChatGPT to make up book titles? You used to have a books staff. Absolutely no fact checking?
Image of a page from the May 18, 2025, edition of the print Chicago Sun-Times. It has "Summer reading list for 2025" as its headline. It is an AI-generated list of books–the authors are real but none of the book titles are. For example, "The Last Algorithm" by Andy Weir, "The Collector's Piece" by Taylor Jenkins Reid, etc. None of the descriptions of these books are real either.

#Kraken
Art by Melizza Santram-Chernov

While visiting Martha’s Vineyard and walking the beach I envisioned a kraken far off the shore. The kraken is a legendary sea monster of enormous size, a colossal octopus known for attacking ships. I’d like to think that this kraken is simply playing with the ship and will eventually place it back in the water, no harm done :)

This is great Monday motivation! The tiny steps still get you there so long as you keep moving 😊

(and this novel project sounds super fun!! Inspired to keep pushing outside my comfort zone too)

Gradually moving into WRITING mode, as I wait for feedback on final art for a picture book.

Current project: novel for young people. Spooky elements, Japanese yokai, *heavily* revamped from previous.

Starting every morning with writing. A bit rusty (so much of past decade has been art) cont'd
Cartoon illustration of a nervous-looking girl stepping off a purple patch labeled "Comfort Zone" toward a distant green patch labeled "Goal," which is surrounded by tiny purple flowers. The text underneath reads "(take tiny steps)," emphasizing gradual progress toward personal growth. Art by Debbie Ridpath Ohi.
