Muse becomes just the fourth Pens' coach to win his first game behind the bench when it comes on the road:

Bowman, 10/4/91 @ Buffalo (5-4)
Badger, 10/5/90 @ Wash (7-4)
Ubriaco, 10/7/88 @ Wash (6-4)

Brazeau, Dewer and Acciari each with 4 hits to lead the team. Brazeau also had a team-high 6 shots, while Shea led with 4 blocks.

Rangers managed only 5 shots in the third to Pens' 14, which is not how it usually looks for the team trailing. Silovs gets his first career shutout and didn't have to be spectacular. Just solid.

Last shutout of the Rangers by the Pens: Jarry on 2/26/22 (1-0, 27 saves). Last @ MSG: Vokoun on 1/31/13 (3-0, 28 saves).

Last shutout by a rookie Pens' G at MSG: Al Smith, 3/8/70 (0-0, 33 saves).

Prior to tonight, last shutout by a rookie G for Pens: Jarry @ NYI (4-0, 31 saves).

Silovs only the second Pens' G to record a shutout on opening night. Fleury did it twice:

10/5/06 v Phil (4-0, 40 saves)
10/3/13 v NJ (3-0, 27 saves)

Brazeau becomes fifth Pens' player to score two goals in his first GP with the team:

Bobby Simpson, 12/30/81 v Caps
John Chabot, 11/10/84 v Islanders
Rob Brown, 10/21/87 v Devils
Jake Guentzel, 11/21/16 v Rangers

Look, the Rangers are not going to be world-beaters this season, but this was an impressive victory. Starting with the roster/lineup decisions, including Silovs.

Silovs (25 saves) becomes the second G in Pens' history to pitch a shutout in his first start with the team. Lagace on 5/8/21 v. Buffalo (1-0, 29 saves).

Mantha tonight with the puck…

Lot of flow in this game. Only 35 draws so far; typical game has 60.

Good shift there by Geno.
bobgrove91.bsky.social
That last shift Sid delivered one of the best hits he’s had in a while.

Saw it in preseason too, but Brunicke not shy about jumping up on the play.

Last 8 seasons, the guys scoring Pens' first goal of the season has been a mix of the expected and unexpected:
2025-Brazeau
2024-Beauvillier
2023-Rust
2022-Sid
2021-Heinen
2020-Jankowski
2019-Geno
2018-Oleksiak

With Kindel+Brunicke, 37 teens have now played for Pens.

Pens have 5 rookies on the roster to start the season. The last time Pens had more was the 2003-04 opener, when all 6 rookies on the roster were in the lineup: Fleury, Caron, Murley, Malone, Koltsov, Orpik. Thanks to @SethRorabaugh for this line of thinking.

Jones (Arlington) is just the second Texas native to play for the Pens. Stefan Noesen (Plano) debuted with Pittsburgh on 12/4/19 against St. Louis.

Mantha joins Sam Poulin and Letang as the only Pens to have played junior at Val d’Or.
bobgrove91.bsky.social
Pens have lost 7 of their last 9 GP against the Rangers, during which their PP has gone 2-for-29 (6.9%).
bobgrove91.bsky.social
Geno has gone 5 consecutive GP @ MSG without a point, his longest such streak. His last goal there came on 1/2/2019.
bobgrove91.bsky.social
Sid is 9-10-19 in 17 season openers. He has been held off the scoresheet in 5 of his last 8 GP @ MSG (2-4-6).

Letang is three hits shy of 2,000 for his career since the NHL began tracking that stat in 2005. He will be the first Pittsburgh player to reach that plateau and the 14th NHL defenseman to do so.
