Inspired by Saad Kahn's Showgirls of Pakistan, we dive into the world of legendary Lollywood playback singers, from “melody queen” Noor Jehan to Naseebo Lal, whose songs were banned in Punjab for their “sexually explicit” content.

I have NOT listened to this exhilarating historic LP nearly enough. Aunt Sally, s/t (2022 Mesh-Key RE + 7" of 1978 concert; OG 1977 Vanity Records). Ripping this and records by several other artists for an all J-women punk-related episode for this coming Wednesday. Totally great!

I have love love LOVED this album for years but finally got it on vinyl. Early all-women Japanese post-punk band Mizutama Shobodan's The Maiden's Prayer Is Dada-Da-Da! (Spittle 2025 RE of Kinniku-Bijo 1981 OG). Ripping it now for an upcoming show

The first listen to MIA, Kala (XL 2021 RE of 2007 OG), I was a bit disappointed. Pulled it out tonight prompted by a Twitter mutual's enthusiasm & am loving it. A reminder that "best music" takes may be not really so much right or wrong but a potential gift if they nudge you to listen again

Wowza. Finally getting around to this notoriousness. The Beach Boys, The Smile Sessions (Capitol, 2025 RE of 2011 OG). Almost bought a bootleg CD attempt to create the album in the late 90s on the street near Columbia University but was flat broke those days & maybe knew I'd eventually get 2 hear it

SOUND ON: Another grail, Yao Su Rong's Love Is Forever (Crown Records, 1971). Granted, she released a dozen other LPs in 1971 alone (and a whopping 40 LPs in 1970), but, yes, this is the one I've always wanted.

SOUND ON: One of my favorite compilations of all time just got updated and reissued. Ryukyu Rare Groove REVISITED | Okinawa Pops 1957-1978 (Nipponophone 2025). Love love love this music so much. Tears!

I wonder if Shiloh likes this LP? First listen to this gorgeous, dramatic Japanese private press folk album. Gekidan Buraiha, The Modern Bible (First & Last 2025 RE of 1975 self-released OG). The OG released in an edition of 100; this version doubles their impact at 200.

I wish I could! It's my first time properly DJing in public so I'll be too occupied to think about much else

TONIGHT on #WFMU's @gtdradio.bsky.social : Recent-ish experimental releases, hot takes on Zambian rock, Guru Guru Brain, outsiders from the US and USSR, Libyan Tuareg music
bodegapop.bsky.social
Here's a take no one will second: My absolute favorite Zambian rock group is Blackfoot. They only released 2 sonically similar LPs, Youth Power (1975, Goodson; 2021 RE via Vinyl Me Please; 1976's Millie is the same LP) & 1978's The Foot Steps. Love the rhythm guitar-forward sound

First listen to Gilberto Gil's 5th or 6th LP, Expresso 2222, a Fontana 1982 RE of the OG 1972 on Philips. I've only heard his 68 LP (w/Os Mutantes) prior. He's maybe the biggest Brazilian artist who I haven't yet heard much of. Doing what I can now to take care of that gap.

SUPERGRAIL! Absolute beast of an album, cut from a 1973-74 Cambodian cassette, 500 LPs printed a decade ago, impossible to find, I've had my tentacles out for a few years, finally nabbed. Drakkar Band, Drakkar '74 (Metal Postcards, 2014 RE of 1973 cassette-only OG)

TONIGHT on #WFMU's @gtdradio.bsky.social : A deep dive into Gal Costa's unimpeachable first seven years on wax. Join us!

Ripping all my Gal Costa LPs for this Wednesday's show. Found this one in Lisbon, in rough shape but plays like a dream. They don't make records like they used to. Gal Costa, -Fa-Tal- (Gal A Todo Vapor) (OG Philips 1971 2xLP). This live album's bracingly good esp. the acoustic LP
bodegapop.bsky.social
An all-time personal grail: One of my top 10, maybe top 5 maybe even top 3 LPs of all time. Gal Costa, Gal (1969 Philips OG Mono). Absurdly brilliant mix of psychedelic, MPB, soul, tropicália, complete genius production with La Lupe-level moments of emotiveness. A timeless listen yet totally sixties
