So much for “globalism.” In Japan, many who identify as liberal are quick to favor holistic admissions over the exam-centric model. The rhetoric is appealing. But I’m less interested in ideological labels than in consequences—especially for students with the least advantage.

#UTokyo is pivoting to “holistic” admissions. It reflects Japan’s loudly touted “globalism.” Now wealth will find new channels as the privileged buy curated “experiences” for their kids. Subjectivity, however well-meant, can inadvertently sideline rural & unprivileged applicants.
