This is from the shell of a white oak killed by the august complex fire.
I stabilized any cracks with CA glue, stripped all the charcoal(the black will not discolor your finger if you rub it) and lightly sanded.
This is meant to show the weathered heart side and the burned heart side.

Fun redwood heart. Mostly sap wood. Colored with iron oxide. Sealed with my normal oil and beeswax. The iron reacts very strongly with the heart, not the same with the sap.
