hi furry friends. i am still working on my anthro dragon tf romance story. i am going to finish it. please enjoy this chunk of writing i did today, aka "when you live in a desert canyon and it's really hot and also humans are not the only or primary anthropomorphic species"

Have you ever been down into the valley on a truly hot day?

When I first came here I thought that the mesas blocking the sun meant that we would be spared the worst of its temper. I’d endured my fair share of miserable days on the eastern prairies, lugging overfull back-packs up the roads to whatever city had festival to set up shop at. Out there, pounded dirt under your feet, breeze doing nothing but bringing weed-pollen to your red, itchy face, you’d give anything for a bit of real shade. And I’d heard how cold the desert gets at night, so surely it couldn’t be that bad during the day, right?

I’m well and truly disabused of that notion now. It’s miserable to be human here. Avians can spread or close their wings to help air move around those ever-convenient feathers, dragons can get away with turning down their internal flames, but us humans just have to sweat and sweat. No wonder all the merchants down here set up shop on the riverbank.

I’d fled my home one afternoon to join the rest of the undercity down there. My hair was stuck to my forehead in sweaty black clumps, and though I wore my dragon-undershirt - not uncommon among humans here, the wing-holes make for wonderful ventilation - my body was shiny and soaking wet. I can’t imagine what I smelled like to fairer species with their sharper noses. People gathered around stalls in stagnant clumps, clinging to the shade as though they could slurp it up like a mosquito does blood. The few children growing up here stayed near the water. A lycan boy watched me with wary eyes as he floated past, panting in the heat, his summer coat still thick to deal with the chilly nights.

I found an unoccupied bench of rugged wood and plopped myself down on it, sighing. The breeze was cooler here, but I still felt sluggish. I shifted, my tailbone itching, then stopped. I’d been trying to fit a tail I wasn’t wearing, and I shook my head. The heat really was getting to me. I couldn’t help but glance up at the canyon walls. Downriver the inverted waterfall spiraled upwards, vanishing into blindingly white streaks of light as it escaped the canyon shadows and the sun found it. A rickety fence surrounded its base, warning people away - not that it mattered. Whatever spell was carved into the wall behind it, it only lifted water, not people. I’d once seen an avian dart through the corner of the waterfall to try and cool himself off, only to be forced back down and crash out the other side immediately, sputtering water. Wouldn’t want anyone hitching a ride, after all.

What were you doing, I wondered? Were you splayed out on one of those basking-pads, dozing off in the sun? I’d never heard of a dragon catching heat-sickness. My mind wandered to the locked box beneath my mattress where I’d hidden Masus’ transformation potions. It was tempting. But no - those were the cost of doing business, and any I drank off the job was a waste of profit. Besides, I was spending half my nights scaled up already. Why would I ever want to spend my days the same way?
