Statement in full:
This book is a brick in my hand. Pride Month draws to a close. The world is on fire. Powerful parts of the UK seek to criminalise protest and eradicate trans people from public life. Industry sells out creatives to AI techbros. Once again, states seek to classify our words—our stories— as pornography. To express fear, disgust and anger at this descent is to be told to calm down. In such a world, queer art is defiance. Queer joy is defiance. Queer rage is defiance. Action is defiance. Traditional publishing will not protect our stories—not if doing so comes with a cost. Chain bookstores will not safeguard our words. They have shareholders to think of. Market shares to protect. Nervous PR elites, quietly shelving their pride campaigns until it’s not contentious. You want stories that are doing something new and different? You want tales that overflow with humanity and emotion in all life’s myriad experiences? You want change? Buy books from small presses. Support queer authors. Reading is one of the most powerful conduits for connection that humanity has. Words as empathy, words as resistance, words as a call to arms. Storytelling is soul-to-soul. Print has permanence. There’s a reason that fascists start by burning books. And we’re a tiny gang of queer writers, editors and creatives, so what else are we going to do? We take that power and we print it and bind it into a block—and if this is what we have, it’s what we’re going to throw. This book is a brick in my hand. #wrathmonth

Ilion Tower has been abandoned for almost a decade. In a well-run city it would have been converted into something productive, but this is Cleon, so it just sits and rots, all 150 floors of it. The ground floor is absolutely wrecked, filled with debris, broken concrete, discarded Nekta syringes—the ephemera of a decade below the notice of the city’s elites. But we’re not here for the amenities. I weave my way through the rubble, ignoring Galataeon’s complaints. He’s a synth; can they even get tetanus? The rear of the building seems to end with a large graffitied wall, but pushing on a loose panel gives access to the fire escape stairs. The first couple of floors are just as ravaged as the ground, but only the most dedicated looters were willing to climb higher than that. On the third floor, we find what I’m looking for.
