there is a terrible, bitter irony in how the Vaccination Assistance Act of 1962—a lesser-discussed achievement of JFK that made funding available to guarantee all children could get vaccinated for polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and other diseases—is now likely to be undone by his nephew.

How incredible is it that these totally ordinary moments from the lives of ancient Babylonian students have survived.

These are the 4,000-year-old teeth marks of a 12ish-year-old kid who bit a clay assignment cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/23...

Young Babylonian students sometimes stuck their fingernails in clay when they were maybe supposed to be paying closer attention in class.

This nearly 4,000-year-old one from Nippur looks almost like a drawing in progress cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/26...

The ancient Assyrian businesswoman Taram-Kubi didn’t just write to her husband about business. She also asked him to come home.

Let me see you in person while I am still alive.” cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/35...

i really enjoy all the weird crank theories that people put forward about the voynich manuscript. I also enjoy how they open with "this is not a book" and then call it a book multiple times

i had never thought about what the etymology of copacetic might be until just now after seeing a post about it. it seems to have just been made up by a guy writing a book about Lincoln.

Without BASIC, you don't have thousands of invested hobbyists in the 70s, who go on to teach millions of young programmers in the 80s.

Without DTSS's ability to manage hundreds of simultaneous users, you don't have UNIX.

And without Thomas Kurtz, we wouldn't have either.

RIP, Professor Kurtz.

- it is a good thing to be attacked by the enemy
- no investigation, no right to speak
- correct ideas arise from social practice
- it is one’s social being which determines their thinking

is searching by language completely broken on this site? I can't tell if the language detection is really bad or if people have to set their post languages manually, because if I search "lang:da" I get a lot of posts that are clearly not in Danish
