They’re great I love them. I’d never heard of them until I was in uni one showed up in Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I love that book and I was so chuffed when I found one in my flat because I’d been keeping an eye out for one for ages! I’m gutted I don’t have any in my new house yet too

Very common in the uplands around more boggy areas, there’s a great pdf ID page on the British bryological society website if you wanted to download it and take it out somewhere. If you get really stuck let me know and I’ll sure I can find some to post!

That’s awesome! One theory is that the cap was used as a type of midge net, so if you ever weave one and need a test subject to try out that theory I’ll volunteer

The name actually relates to the calyptra which covers the capsule looking a bit like blonde hairs before its lost when the sporophyte opens
