📢Since nearly a year, refugees in Agadez (Niger) have been engaged in a daily non-violent protest against the inhumane conditions in the UNHCR center. On August 21st, six protest leaders were arrested.

What happened in August in the Central Mediterranean?
In August, 5289 people arrived in Italy by sea. 1073 were rescued by civil SAR – despite increasing violence and ongoing criminalization by Italian authorities. The Algeria-Sardinia route is becoming more active again.

On August 24, Libyan militias opened fire on the Ocean Viking with 87 rescued people on board. It is one of the most serious attacks on a rescue ship in the Central Med to date.
The civil fleet won't stay silent. Legal action is underway.

They knew boats were in distress. They failed to intervene in time. They failed to alert civil search and rescue teams.

Our thoughts are with the survivors who saw their children, parents, siblings and friends die before their eyes.
The sea did not kill them but Fortress Europe did which forces people to risk their lives at sea.
Italian authorities and Frontex monitor these waters constantly.

They could have been saved.
At least 27 people -including a one-and a half year old child, lost their lives in a deadly shipwreck off Lampedusa on August 13. Many more are still missing. Women, men, children -with homes, dreams and ambitions.

What happened in the Central Mediterranean in July?

A total of 6.490 people reached Italy by sea. 807 people were rescued thanks to the effort of the search and rescue NGOs.

🕊️ 44 people died while seeking safety, 55 are reported missing and the fate of 38 others is unknown.
