As someone who has previously attempted such a task, I’m astonished they found enough for a whole semester… do you know what else is on the list?

A young lady pursued by a snail
Was startled and started to wail
You confounded leech
We’ll fight on the beach
In Brighton, now follow my trail!

This slimy young snail pursued her,
Despite a hat that couldn’t possibly suit her
He cried “my belle, you’re just swell,
Now come dwell in my shell
For I am your slimy young suitor”

Malcolm Gladwell had a good series about Hitler’s Olympics which discussed Owens in detail. www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/rev...

One might also suggest that nations and nationalisms competing is also inherently political. On Owens, I agree with you, although interestingly (IIRC) he wanted to play down the political aspects, even going so far as to invent a story about befriending a nazi athlete during and after the games.

We don’t know the reason why this video/account was removed, or how many times it was shared/viewed prior to that, this theory was all over social media during the pandemic and, anecdotally at least, belief in it doesn’t seem that uncommon here, some dodgy videos still up too

Also, an example of the fabulous information environment on Chinese social media, a video of Musk talking about his early life but the Chinese subtitles claim he is stating that Covid was a man-made virus from the USA and that the vaccines were designed to kill people...

you can definitely make the case that their have been some benefits for China (and certainly for the govt) in taking this route but fringe politics, conspiracy theories and anti vax dog shit are all very much present on Chinese social media sites

do many people not feel more attached to their community than to their region? Or feel more attached to their region than to their nation? Besides at one point in history these individual nationalisms weren’t in vogue, they also had to be crafted by intellectuals to some extent, no?

That’s almost the worst example he could have picked to make his point about foreigners, anybody who’s been in China will have seen huge numbers of locals flouting this rule. lol at the pic he chose too featuring foreigners with helmets and the Chinese lady behind without one

To be fair... most people reading these articles probably still haven't heard of Chongqing. But this makes me think I should try writing some Chinese articles on WeChat like: "Bath: the most charming English town you've never heard of"

Basically I think the extent to which Han culture predominates and holds power in modern China, the assimilationist tendencies of the state and how this disadvantages minorities are all sort of underplayed in the discussion going on under this post
