yup, you're definitely nostr material.

-quick to anger? tick
-outcast vibes? tick
-seems insatiably drawn to pure and yet unattainable decentralisation? tick

off you go, they're waiting for you!

just follow jack to nostr. you're who it's for. don't complain here. sheesh.
April 26, 2025 at 10:43 AM
atpropriation. come on.
April 25, 2025 at 9:16 AM
I'm pretty sure it'll speed it up.
April 22, 2025 at 3:35 PM
If any country can set their own speed limits then why have speed limits at all?
April 22, 2025 at 8:02 AM
Are you kidding? Looks like a sanity test from the 1950s.
April 22, 2025 at 6:50 AM
No. He can take 5 minutes and register a domain.
April 22, 2025 at 6:48 AM
You could have registered a domain in the time in took to read the replies to this post.

the problem is the profiles themselves are on relays. so you have to find the relays to find the profiles to find the relays and on and on, update after update. big math problem. you can sort of gossip around it but a critical mass of clients don't do that for various reasons. it's all just stuck.
April 18, 2025 at 1:18 PM
it's still on a VM or containers but there are third party services that'll get you one quick, pay $10 a month. the problem is everyone uses the same few relays in order to be aware of each other, this because governance is too weak. so take out those few relays and nostr becomes unusable for most.
April 18, 2025 at 12:56 PM
nah, nostr would be trivially easy to hobble beyond use. one call to google to ban the top android clients from Play, one to apple for the top ios clients, a few web domains blocked, maybe top 5 relay domains blocked for good measure (those host pretty much everyone anyway) and done. 2 weeks max.
April 18, 2025 at 10:17 AM
otherwise you end up with a lot of people talking past each other, person A confused about what X does, person B confused about Y does, and no real bedrock discussion
April 18, 2025 at 5:56 AM
it's important to sketch this all out, as there are a lot of levels at play: labeller, appview, relay (or no relay, or other relay), pds (self hosted or not) did method (web, plc now, plc later, other later) plc.dir, client ecosystem... and how things are now versus how things are on the roadmap.

arbitrary authoritarianism
a.k.a. national laws
April 17, 2025 at 1:53 PM
yup, same outcome. with a nostr app (assuming nostr doesn't fade out and instead gets big) that app would be taken down just the same. and people would be left with other apps or vpns, also just the same as bluesky. the fact that nostr posts are sprinkled around lots of relays changes little.
April 17, 2025 at 1:52 PM
A "well then we'll ban your app"
B "but we said we can't remove the content because..."
A "look we don't care, your app is how people are accessing it"
B "well yes but.."
A "goodbye"
April 17, 2025 at 1:13 PM
yes, exactly. how is this not obvious?
April 17, 2025 at 1:12 PM
but what is the imagined response to "get bent?"?
is it "okay, you got me there" ?
April 17, 2025 at 1:03 PM
why not talk about decentralization as a means of preventing de-platforming by, wait for it, platforms? In-house moderation teams? Not by governments that make and enforce national laws. The moment you take it in that direction then decentralization becomes a thin facade for techno-anarchy.
April 17, 2025 at 9:23 AM
enjoy your fever dream of techno-enabled worldwide diplomatic immunity
April 17, 2025 at 9:19 AM
are we just going to pretend laws don't exist?
April 17, 2025 at 9:16 AM
yes indeed, the fever-dream conflation of decentralisation and diplomatic immunity
April 17, 2025 at 8:53 AM
why assume that decentralisation somehow overrides national laws? it's like some dream of a "decentralised" driver's license that enables the holder to drive wherever and however they want, ignoring all road rules of all countries. makes no sense. if you're angry at a law, be angry at the law.
